As I sat on my back porch in the early morning of the 4th of July, I seen a flicker of brilliant yellow out among the sunflowers that are planted in my backyard.  It was a couple of little Goldfinches. They were the color of sunshine!  I ran and grabbed my camera hopes of  capturing some great shots of this beautiful little bird.

These two are the first Goldfinch I have seen this year.  Although widespread and very common, I have been reading where these little birds are in decline in some areas.

This little female is enjoying the sunflower seeds which they dearly love. Their diet is mostly made up of seeds even though they do eat insects.  She is much paler in color than the male finch.  Even though she lacks the brilliant yellow color of her partner, she is still such a pretty little bird blending in with the colors of the sunflower that she perched upon.

She doesn’t posses the little black cap on the forehead that the male has but she does have the black wings tipped in white and a little smaller in size.

The male finch has brilliant yellow color during certain months of the year. He has a small cap of black on his head and black wings tipped in white.

  • American Goldfinches are the only finch that molts its body feathers twice a year, once in late winter and again in late summer. The brightening yellow of male goldfinches each spring is one welcome mark of approaching warm months. allaboutbirds.org   The male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter. (wikipedia) Once the spring molt is complete, the body of the male is a brilliant lemon yellow, a color produced by carotenoid pigments from plant materials in its diet. (wikipedia)

From time to time through out the day I would catch myself looking out the kitchen window at the sunflowers in hopes to see the finches, or to see if there were more who had gathered there and joined these two to have a meal.
